Botox

Every time you smile, laugh and frown contraction of your facial muscles causes skin creasing. So these dynamic lines are lines of expression. Because they are related to the movement of your facial muscles they disappear when you relax your face. However over the years the dynamic expression lines become permanent wrinkles etched onto your face. However Botox can treat these lines and wrinkles.

Although there are different options for the treatment of these lines and wrinkles treatment with Botulinum Toxin Type A (BoNTA) is a popular choice. Botox is a common name for BoNTA.

What is Botox?

Botox® is a brand name for one formulation of Botulinum Toxin Type A (BoNTA). However BoNTA is a prescription only medicine. Treating dynamic lines requires a BoNTA prescription. Moreover, to find out if you are suitable for Botox treatment you have to have a medical consultation. Then treatment can proceed if you are found suitable for BoNTA and it will be prescribed for you. The treatment is quick, simple and safe because it involves the injection of very small amounts of toxin (BoNTA). So it is injected very precisely into various muscles of your face. In this way the Botox blocks the nerve impulses to treated muscles.

What are the different types of Botox?

You may have heard that there are several formulations of Botox? In fact there are 3 formulations of Botulinum Toxin Type A (BoNTA) licensed for cosmetic use in the UK:

  • Botox® manufactured by Allergan is the heritage brand
  • Bocouture® this is a ‘pure’ toxin, free from contaminating proteins (German)
  • Azzalure® manufactured by Ipsen for in the UK Galderma

Which Areas can be treated with Botox?

The 3 “areas” commonly targeted for treatment are:

  • Glabella or Frown line
  • Peri-Orbital or Crow’s Feet Lines
  • Frontalis or Forehead Lines

What Other Botox Treatments are available?

Treatment of your lower face is also possible however lower face treatments are ‘off label’ or unlicensed.

Lower face ‘areas’ include:

  • Jaw Line and Neck (Nefertiti Neck Lift)
  • Lip Lift
  • Corners of the Mouth (for resting sad face)
  • Masseter Muscles for Facial Slimming, and to prevent Tooth Grinding
  • Chin ‘Peau d’Orange’ (crinkly or dimply chin)
  • Gummy Smile

How long does Botox treatment last?

The effect of your treatment may last from 3 to 6 months so most people require re-treatment after 4 months or 16 weeks. However treated regularly the duration of your treatment benefit can increase over time.
